In the grand scheme of wellness, the value of hearing gets overlooked.
In fact, it’s apparent in that last sentence–Even our language is centered around our sense of vision rather than hearing. Perhaps if we used terms like “hearing often gets misheard” instead of “overlooked,” our cultural view of hearing care would change. Because of the lack of education about caring for hearing, many employers, HR departments, and companies in general view “hearing care benefits” simply as discounted hearing aids.
In reality, hearing wellness is multifaceted and applies to ALL employees, not just those who have clinical hearing loss.

Hearing wellness benefits are essential for all employees because they encompass hearing loss prevention such as safe use of headsets, earphones, earbuds, headphones, or other devices while working, management of hearing disorders such as Tinnitus (ringing in the ears), amplification of types of hearing loss for which hearing aids aren’t always recommended, care for more severe hearing losses in the form of hearing aids, and much more. From a practical business standpoint, an ounce of prevention is truly worth MORE than a pound of cure as recent data show that employers spend an average of $2,200 per year on employees with undiagnosed hearing loss. Imagine the savings if those hearing issues could have been entirely prevented or treated sooner!

In the 21st century, we should consider diversity in all areas of life, including hearing care. To think of hearing benefits as mere access to discounted hearing aids is not only short-sighted, it’s discriminatory against the needs of others who have ears (in other words, everyone). Providing employees access to audiologists means less stress in the workplace, improved performance, increased mental health, and a myriad of other secondary benefits.
